Situated 10 miles off the southern tip of Corfu, in the Ionian Sea, an almost exotic island is hidden! Perched on limestone rocks covered with lush green vegetation, surrounded by turquoise blue waters, and crowned by a bright blue sky, the island of Paxos is truly a little piece of paradise!
Small traditional hamlets and picturesque fishing villages, bathed in light and colored with bright earth tones, bring to mind nothing less than the canvas of an impressionist painting.
Quaint little alleys, beautiful Venetian architecture, pristine white pebble beaches with crystal clear water and coves, and sea caves… too numerous to mention, are the elements that create the magic that is Paxos.
What better destination for couples, families with children, groups of friends, or nature-lovers and walkers! The island has something to offer for everyone – whether that is adventuring along the coast by boat or kayak and swimming in secluded coves, visiting the white sandy beaches of Anti-Paxos, exploring the myriad of footpaths that crisscross the island through the olive groves, or just chilling by the pool at your villa.
Accommodation: Paxos (or Paxi) and its sister island of Antipaxos (or Antipaxi) are a Natura 2000 protected area and consequently construction is subject to strict regulation. As a result, you won’t see huge buildings or large hotel complexes on the island, but only small hotels, traditional or modern houses, apartments and villas that are available for holiday rentals.
Dining Out: In the three seaside villages, Gaios, Loggos and Lakka, with their pretty squares and alleyways, you can find a wide selection of traditional tavernas, restaurants, cafes and bars. Further inland, in the quiet hamlets of Fontana, Magazia and Bogdanatika, there are also some hidden gems to be discovered!
Amenities: The coastal villages all have small supermarkets (with fresh fruit and vegetables), bakeries, gift and clothes shops and ATMs. There are two petrol stations on the island, one in Gaios and one in the hamlet of Magazia whilst butcher’s shops and pharmacies can be found in Gaios, Magazia and Lakka. Gaios is the only village with a proper bank and an optician. The island’s medical center is in the hamlet of Bogdanatika, approximately 1.5km from Gaios.
Transport: The best way to discover the delights of this beautiful island is to hire your own transport. Cars, buggies, quad bikes and motorbikes are all available for rent in the main villages, as are self-drive motorboats. (Please note that a speedboat license is required for boats with engines over 30hp.)
There is also a local bus which travels the length of the island several times a day in mid and peak season.
The five taxis on the island provide a reasonably priced service for trips to the other villages, beaches and evenings out. It is always a good idea to book in advance!
